Lucid Motors CEO Peter Rawlinson recently highlighted just how far ahead the Lucid Air is compared to its competitors when it comes to efficiency. As per Rawlinson, if Tesla were to maintain its rate of progress, the Model S would match the Lucid Air Pure’s present efficiency figures in 2032.
The Lucid CEO shared his bold observation in a post on his LinkedIn page, where he highlighted the fact that the Lucid Air Pure has achieved 5.0 miles per kWh and 146 MPGe. This, the CEO noted, effectively makes the Lucid Air Pure the most efficient production car to date. Rawlinson included an image comparing the Lucid Air’s efficiency against its rivals to highlight his point.
“Efficiency is of critical importance in making a better, lighter, more spacious, longer-range vehicle, and directly impacts cost to manufacture. Therefore, efficiency is arguably the single most valid litmus of a company’s core EV technological capability,” Rawlinson wrote in his LinkedIn post.
It would be quite easy for the Lucid Air Pure to beat the Model S in terms of efficiency since it is a Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicle and the flagship Tesla is All Wheel Drive (AWD). Tesla does have a Rear Wheel Drive vehicle with good efficiency figures — the Model 3 RWD — though it is a smaller car than the Lucid Air Pure. As seen in fueleconomy.gov, the Model 3 RWD Standard Range has a combined efficiency of 132 MPGe, with 140 MPGe in the city and 125 MPGe on the highway. Efficiency ratings for the Model 3 Long Range RWD are expected to be quite impressive as well.
The Lucid Air is undoubtedly a very well designed flagship car, though the fact that it competes in the full-size luxury sedan segment limits its customer base. That being said, the Lucid Air has seen a rise in deliveries, with the company noting in a press release that it was able to deliver 2,394 vehicles in the second quarter, a 70% year-over-year increase. Lucid’s sales may soon see a notable rise with the release of the upcoming Gravity SUV, which is expected to start at about $80,000.
