Tesla did not pay Kim Kardashian for Optimus bot, Cybercab publicity

Tesla did not pay socialite Kim Kardashian for a recent publicity opportunity with the company’s Optimus robot, dispelling any claims that the influencer took payment.

Kardashian is paid over two million dollars per post for promoting products from other companies due to her social media reach, which includes over 359 million followers on Instagram.

Earlier this month, skepticism and speculation regarding Kardashian’s potential relationship with Tesla started to catalyze as Kim put video and pictures of her with Tesla’s Optimus robot and the company’s recently revealed Cybercab Robotaxi on her social media pages.

Last year, Kardashian was one of the first celebrities to obtain a Tesla Cybertruck. She also posted various images with the vehicle to her social media pages and had custom work done to the all-electric pickup.

The Cybertruck was one of the hottest vehicles for celebrities through the last few months of last year and into 2024. However, Kardashian’s posts with the Cybertruck were not candid photos taken by paparazzi, at least for the most part. They were taken with photographers and appeared to be images taken of her on wishes.

We speculated about what could possibly going on with Tesla and Kardashian recently, and we were confused as to why she seemed to have such unique privileges with the company’s products:

Because Tesla is so heavily against the idea of spending massive amounts of money on advertising, it seemed far from reality that it would use Kardashian, whose social media posts can cost companies over $2 million a pop, to gain publicity on things like Optimus and Cybercab — two products that are likely to gain visibility on their own simply because of their capabilities.

Tesla did not have to pay, according to her publicist, who revealed the information to The New York Times.

It seems Kardashian may have just simply had the special privilege to test some of Tesla’s most heavily sought-after products. Lucky her!

Tesla rolls out updated referral program for North America

With the last few weeks of the fourth quarter almost here, Tesla has rolled out a new referral program for North America. The new referral program features bigger discounts and bigger rewards, including a pretty notable discount for the company’s newest and boldest vehicle yet—the Cybertruck.

Tesla announced its referral program update for the U.S. and Canada in a post on Tesla North America’s official social media account on X. As per the electric vehicle maker, customers can now “earn $1,000 by giving someone else up to $2,000 off a new Tesla.”

Tesla North America also noted that if customers take delivery before the end of 2024, they will also be receiving 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) and three months of unlimited Supercharging.

Vehicles that are covered by the updated referral program are the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and the Cybertruck. As noted in a NotATeslaApp report, buyers of the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck are eligible for a $2,000 discount, while Model 3 and Model Y buyers are eligible for a $1,000 discount in the U.S.

Those who refer customers to Tesla stand to receive a $1,000 reward for those in the United States, or CAD1,300 for those in Canada. This is the highest referral reward that Tesla has given to date. As per the updated referral program, users can obtain up to ten referrals–worth $10,000 or CAD13,000–which could then be used as a discount for vehicle or Tesla Shop purchases.

Interestingly enough, Tesla’s updated referral program also noted that those who participate would have a “chance to win an invitation to an upcoming Tesla event.” This suggests that Tesla may be preparing for its next event, which may be related to the more affordable models that are on track to enter production in the first half of 2025, as referenced in Tesla’s Q3 2024 Update Letter.

Tesla China now has over 400 domestic Tier-1 suppliers: report

Recent reports from local media outlets have claimed that Tesla now has over 400 Tier-1 suppliers in China. From this number, over 60 have reportedly entered the electric vehicle maker’s global supply chain, as per a recent report from Shanghai Securities News

In a comment to the publication, a source from Tesla China reportedly noted that Tesla will work with suppliers to create safer and more efficient products. The Tesla source also reportedly noted that the company hopes to bring more local suppliers to the international stage. These comments suggest that Tesla will not just be building the Model Y, Model 3, and Megapack in China in the future.

Back in August 2022, Tesla Vice President of External Affairs Grace Tao noted that over 95% of Giga Shanghai’s factory components were already being provided by domestic suppliers. This has helped Tesla optimize its operations in China, and it has also helped Gigafactory Shanghai become the company’s primary vehicle export hub.

The report from Shanghai Securities News also highlighted a number of milestones for Giga Shanghai. Being the electric vehicle maker’s largest factory by volume, the facility has delivered 676,000 vehicles in the first three quarters of 2024. This means that Tesla China’s operations account for over half of the company’s global deliveries from Q1-Q3 2024.

The publication also reiterated Tesla China’s previous claims that on average, a vehicle rolls off Giga Shanghai’s assembly line every 40 seconds. This makes Giga Shanghai the most productive Tesla factory in the world today, with an annual estimated output of over 950,000 vehicles.

Tesla has a pretty strong presence in China, with vehicles like the Model Y performing very well in its class in the domestic auto market. In light of this, Tesla has reportedly brought its humanoid robot, Optimus, the Model Y, Model 3, and a number of components that were produced domestically at the second China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE), which recently opened in Beijing.
