Tesla appears to be starting Megafactory Shanghai construction

Tesla is closing in on the construction of a new Megapack factory in China, as new equipment has been spotted on site.

After Tesla secured a site and held a signing ceremony for the upcoming Shanghai Megafactory in December, construction was expected to begin in Q1. As seen in a video shared by Wu Wa on Monday, and as the quarter draws to a close, new construction equipment has made its way to the site, suggesting that further construction could be imminent.

In the video, you can see multiple construction vehicles, including a crane, a bulldozer, and a few other hauling trucks spotted near the site and at the entrance. The video also shows the delivery of what appears to be a large electrical cabinet. Wu Wa also points out that multiple new steel pipes can be seen laying on the ground, along with crews being shuttled around the site.

You can see the full video from Wu Wa below.

The Megafactory is located near Tesla’s automotive “Gigafactory” in Shanghai, which currently produces the Model Y and Model 3 for several markets in Asia, Europe, Australia and elsewhere.

Originally aiming to start construction in Q3 2023, the project later revised expectations to instead begin production in the second quarter of this year. It’s not clear how long the Megafactory will take to complete construction, though we can expect to see how quickly it progresses in the next several months.

The Shanghai Megafactory is eventually expected to be able to produce 10,000 Megapacks per year, or the same amount as its sister Megafactory in Lathrop, California. Recently, the Lathrop Megafactory has been spotted with hundreds of Megapacks being readied to go out, just as a number of Megapack-based storage energy systems have come online around the world.

Tesla diner, drive-in and Supercharger preparing work on interiors

Tesla continues to make progress on its upcoming diner, drive-in theater and Supercharger in Los Angeles, with recent drone footage showing new water runoff infrastructure, preparations for stucco installation on the first-floor walls, and seemingly, materials for the start of some interior construction.

In a drone video update shared by YouTube channel 247Tesla on Sunday, you can see new stacks of sheetrock both inside and outside of entrances to the Tesla diner building, as construction prepares to begin focus on interiors. The video also shows a new rectangular area dug roughly five feet deep into the ground, which the video’s host says will likely be used to control water runoff.

In addition, you can see shots of the site’s power shed, though it doesn’t include transformers or batteries as of yet. The diner building’s walls surrounding the first-floor structure have also now been covered with a waterproofing sealer, the host notes, which is usually installed prior to stucco being applied.

Watch the full video from 247Tesla below.

The channel recently also shared a video detailing some of the work on the diner building’s top deck finish work and seating and another showing shots of the first of two movie theater projector screens going up.

The upcoming Supercharger, located at 7001 West Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, is expected to house a 1950s-style diner, a drive-in movie theater playing clips, and, of course, roughly 32 Supercharger stalls for Tesla owners to charge. Tesla broke ground on the unique diner and Supercharger location in September after receiving a series of construction approvals throughout 2023.

Dubbed “Milliways” in renders, referring to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe in novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the diner was originally envisioned by CEO Elon Musk to include waiters on roller skates, rock and roll music and a highlight reel of the best scenes in movie history.

These are the latest wrap colors to hit the shop since Tesla added the satin rose gold, satin abyss blue, and slip grey options last month. Tesla also added an additional colored wrap option for the Model 3 and Model Y in January, after initially launching the service last year.

In addition to colored Cybertruck wraps, Tesla also sells a clear satin film on its website for slightly cheaper at $5,000. Any of these purchase prices also includes the cost of both materials and installation, and Tesla also notes that it will provide buyers with a loaner vehicle during installation.

Although Tesla initially launched wraps for its vehicles at a handful of California locations, the automaker also launched wraps at a service center outside the state for the first time. In addition to those in West Covina, Oceanside, Costa Mesa, and Santa Clara, California, the automaker now offers Cybertruck and other wrap services at its Collision South location in Austin, Texas.

Cybertrucks with unique wrap designs were being spotted throughout much of last year, ahead of the official launch of the electric vehicle (EV) in November. In October, multiple sources reported that Tesla would likely offer Cybertruck wraps within six months of its launch, just a day after the automaker first launched Model 3 and Model Y wraps.

Around 380 Cybertrucks were spotted at Tesla’s Giga Texas
