Tesla Cybertruck reaches new peak charging speed with NxuOne

Tesla Cybertruck reached a new peak charging speed with a third-party charger from Nxu, a tech company that specializes in innovative EV charging and energy storage solutions.

Nxu’s NxuOne Charging Station helped the Cybertruck reach a new peak charging rate of 327kW, beating the previous record of 253kW.

The test was validated with several Cybertruck units and a NxuOne Charging Station earlier this week. The Cybertruck, with its revolutionary 800-volt architecture that enables faster charging speeds, peaked at 327.67 kW, 814 volts, and a peak current of 462 amps.

Charging speed is incredibly important due to the fact that it is still a major argument against owning an EV. Although it is widely blown out of proportion due to the fact that many EV owners charge at home, stops at Superchargers and other EV charging stations can be longer than trips to a gas station for ICE drivers, although trip planning has widely challenged that logic.

Nevertheless, EV companies are still gearing up for the capability to charge their vehicles faster, and one of the ways they are doing this is through the development of the 800-volt architecture.

Tesla is not the first company to utilize this strategy, but because it operates such a robust network of EV chargers across the globe and will adopt the high-speed capable architecture with the rollout of the V4 Superchargers.

“The Nxu team has worked incredibly hard to validate the charging power of our NxuOne Charging System in real-world scenarios,” Nxu Founder, Chairman, and CEO Mark Hanchett said. “We believe we’ve created one of the fastest charging units available today, and now we have the data to substantiate those claims. Our aim is to enhance the EV charging ecosystem by providing reliable and fast charging solutions for every make, model, or size of EV. The Cybertruck charging sessions are a huge step towards realizing that goal.”

Tesla confirmed in October 2023 that the Cybertruck would equip the 800-volt architecture, noting that the strategy would help bring “notable cost savings” as well as performance improvements. Vehicles with an 800-volt architecture are void of as much copper, which helps reduce weight.

Nxu was also the first third-party company to perform a successful NACS charging session on a Cybertruck without a Tesla Supercharger station in late February.

Tesla executives to host discussion on the upgraded Model 3 this week

Two of Tesla’s top executives are scheduled to hold a discussion on the upgraded Model 3 later this week, as posted on X by the automaker this week.

Tesla’s main X account said that Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen and VP of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy would be holding a chat about the upgraded Model 3, set to take place on March 7 at 2 p.m. PT. The post also asked that users submit questions in the thread that they would like to hear answered during the talk.

Tesla launched the upgraded Model 3 in North America in January, just months after the automaker premiered the vehicle in several European, Asian and other markets last year.

The vehicle includes several exterior and interior updates from the legacy Model 3, including re-designed front and rear bumpers, new ambient lighting, an upgraded center console featuring wireless charging, a bigger touchscreen, and a rear entertainment display, among other design improvements, still.

The refreshed sedan is currently available in two configurations, a rear-wheel-drive and an all-wheel-drive “Long Range,” though many are awaiting the Model 3 Performance “Ludicrous” edition that von Holzhausen recently confirmed would someday be coming. Multiple prototypes of the new Model 3 Performance have also been spotted in recent weeks, suggesting that the trim’s launch could be drawing near.

The two executives also discussed the upgraded Model 3 on a segment of Jay Leno’s Garage this week, echoing many of the same points recently made by Marques Brownlee, including when he called the Model 3 refresh a “mini Model S.”

Moravy said during the video that the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in rear-wheel-drive configurations can be charged to 100 percent “all day every day,” while the Long Range trims include nickel-based batteries that should be charged to 80 or 90 percent — unless you’re Supercharging while on a road trip, in which case they can be charged to 100 percent.

Tesla China Feb sales see 18.87% YoY decline, mirroring industry trend

Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) has revealed that Tesla China’s sales of Giga Shanghai-made vehicles declined in February 2024. The decrease came amidst the Chinese New Year holiday, which appears to have impacted China’s general automotive sector last month.

As per the CPCA, Tesla China sold a total of 60,365 vehicles produced in China during February 2024. This figure represents an 18.87% year-over-year decrease compared to February 2023 and a 15.51% month-over-month decline from January 2024. While Tesla China’s results in February did show a decline, it should be noted that other automakers in the country saw similar trends.

For context, BYD reported a 36.84% year-over-year decrease and a 39.30% month-over-month drop compared to January 2024. Nio saw a 33.11% year-over-year and a 19.12% month-over-month decline, and Xpeng saw a 24.38% year-over-year and 44.91% month-over-month decrease in sales, as per a report from CNEV Post. With this in mind, it would appear that Tesla China’s February 2024 results generally aligned with the country’s auto sector.

The Chinese New Year holiday this year was held from February 10 to 17, 2024. Interestingly enough, the holiday fell in January during the previous year. Tesla China sold a total of 66,051 vehicles in January 2023, 26,843 of which were sold domestically and 39,208 of which were exported to foreign territories.

Tesla operates its largest production facility by output in China, with Giga Shanghai being listed as having an annual capacity of over 950,000 vehicles. The facility produces Tesla’s two highest-selling vehicles, the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, and it caters to both the domestic Chinese market and several countries abroad.

Tesla China sold a total of 71,447 Giga Shanghai-made vehicles in January 2024. These figures represented an 8.17% increase year-on-year and a 24.10% decrease compared to December 2023. As per CPCA data, Tesla China’s January sales figures included 39,881 vehicles that were sold domestically and 31,566 vehicles that were exported abroad.
