Tesla improves cold-weather Supercharging performance in latest software update

Tesla is aiming to improve Supercharging performance for its electric vehicles in its latest software update, making life easier for owners, especially in colder climates.

Cold weather and colder climates are tough on electric vehicles, mostly due to the temperature and its impact on battery performance. In the past, Tesla has combatted issues in cold weather with things like the heat pump, which has now been adopted by other automakers, like Ford, to increase performance and fight range loss when it is cold outside.

Hardware is not the only way to combat these issues, though. Tesla is showing that with a new improvement to its battery preconditioning, and it is rolling it out in a software update.

Tesla said it would release “Cold Weather Improvements” to its vehicles in Software Update 2024.44, and it will be especially relevant to those who are utilizing the automaker’s charging piles at Supercharging locations.

Tesla writes in the release notes for the feature (via Not a Tesla App):

“Battery Preconditions have been improved to provide better Supercharging, as well as better automatic windshield defogging before, during, and after Supercharging.”

In an effort to make a more well-rounded and convenient charging experience, Tesla not only continues to build out more Superchargers across the world, but it also makes somewhat regular and routine improvements to the tech it already has. It is something that can be consistently improved upon due to the Over-the-Air updates that Tesla rolls out.

With the struggles that some owners feel in cold weather, these improvements and updates to the Supercharging performance in these temperatures are drastic and crucial.

However, it should be noted that EV ownership in cold weather regions is not as difficult as some might make it seem.

The technology being developed and improvements being made across nearly every EV maker are working to eliminate any shortcomings the vehicles might have in colder temperatures.

Tesla bull estimates Trump win can help push TSLA to $1-$1.5 trillion valuation

Wedbush Securities Senior Equity Analyst Dan Ives recently provided his insights on the potential effects of a Trump presidency to Tesla. As per Ives, a Trump presidency may be negative for the general electric vehicle sector, but it would be highly beneficial to Tesla.

In an interview with CNBC, Ives noted that a Trump win is actually a dream scenario for Tesla bulls. Ives estimated that a Trump win could push Tesla into a market cap of up to $1.5 trillion.

“It’s a dream scenario for any Tesla bull. I think this could ultimately add $40-$50 per share to TSLA stock right off the bat. We could now be talking about a $1 trillion, $1.5 trillion market cap for Tesla. Because first off, from an EV perspective, (Trump) will pull the EV tax credit, but that from a scale and scope perspective, is a positive for Tesla.

Apart from a boost to its market cap, Ives estimated that a Trump administration could very well fast-track Tesla’s efforts to deploy its self-driving vehicle fleet.

“He will fast track autonomous FSD, Cybercab could get pulled forward by about a year… This is really, if you’re a Tesla bull, if you wake up to this, this is exactly what you’d wanna see. And of course, Musk will clearly have a big voice in a Trump administration.

“I think that would be a top initiative, to fast-track FSD autonomous. There’s been a lot of regulatory hurdles. And this is something that Musk has talked about in Robotaxi day. Obviously the initial sentiment was negative. This is gonna be the key. Because ultimately, I think Tesla is the most undervalued AI name in the market. And you look what’s happen here. It’s just gonna unlock that opportunity for Tesla and Musk,” Ives said.

Tesla Model S Plaid outfitted for police use in latest UP.FIT release

Tesla’s electric vehicles (EVs) have been rolling out as police cruisers over the past few years, though the company’s Model S Plaid has only recently received its first buildout for such a use case.

During day one of SEMA on Tuesday, Tesla mod kit manufacturer Unplugged Performance unveiled its latest police cruiser buildout for the Model S Plaid, which is considered the world’s quickest accelerating production car. While Unplugged Performance’s UP.FIT division has already deployed other police vehicle builds for Tesla’s Model Y, Model 3, and Cybertruck, this is the first we’ve seen of a Model S Plaid outfitted by the company.

According to Tesla, the Model S Plaid has a 0 to 60 mph acceleration of just 1.99 seconds, a top speed of 200 mph, and a range of 359 miles. Many have also set world records with the Model S Plaid in the 0 to 60 and quarter-mile acceleration runs, including one driver who clinched an impressive 8.56-second quarter-mile time in July.

Unplugged Performance has deployed several Model Y and Model 3 units outfitted for service on U.S. police forces over the last few years, though this is the first time the company has built a specific police cruiser kit for the Model S Plaid. Earlier this year, the company also unveiled its design for a copped-out Cybertruck, and it has already deployed the Cybertruck to multiple U.S. police departments.

Along with offering modifications for police and other government fleet vehicles, Unplugged Performance has also become well-known for its racing arm. In particular, many are familiar with the manufacturer’s work on racer Randy Pobst’s Model S Plaid, dubbed “Dark Helmet,” which has been used in the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb for multiple years now.
