Tesla FSD transfers are back for Q4 following Cybertaxi, Robovan unveil

Tesla has once again re-launched free transfers of Full Self-Driving (FSD) when buyers purchase a new vehicle, coming on the heels of the company’s unveiling event for the Cybercab and Robovan this week.

On Thursday, Tesla updated one of its support pages to say that it will once again be allowing transfers of FSD Supervised for those who take delivery of a newly purchased vehicle by the end of this year. The update comes after Elon Musk previously said that Tesla would allow FSD transfers for “one more quarter” in Q3, after one shareholder shouted such a suggestion for the extension from the audience.

“Customers who take delivery of a new Tesla vehicle between October 10, 2024 and December 31, 2024 may qualify for transferring Full Self-Driving (FSD) (Supervised) from their current vehicle to their new vehicle,” Tesla writes on its website.

As in past rounds, the company highlights certain conditions for the promo, including that inventory vehicles, commercial vehicles, leased vehicles, and those delivered before October 10 are not eligible for the promotion, nor are those that have been totaled.

Musk agreed to have Tesla launch FSD transfers for “one more quarter” during Tesla’s Annual Shareholders meeting in June, after a shareholder literally yelled “one more quarter” as the CEO began answering a question about transfers. While Musk went on to agree to the one more quarter of FSD transfers, he also explained why Tesla needed to avoid doing so, emphasizing that, ultimately, the company has to make some money on the software.

“It is pretty complex for us to do this,” Musk said. “It sort of adds a fair bit of complexity to the sales process, but yeah. And it is tough, because we’ve got to earn revenue somehow, so… You know, transfer is tough.”

Prior to that, Tesla has launched multiple rounds of FSD transfers, although it initially launched the promo as a “one-time amnesty” last year. Since then, the promotion has been widely requested by customers, perhaps indicating why it has been revived so many times.

The re-launch of FSD transfers also comes after Tesla unveiled its Cybercab and Robovan autonomous vehicle platforms on Thursday, which was the same day the re-boot of the promo was spotted. During the event, Musk also announced that FSD Unsupervised would begin deploying in California and Texas as soon as next year.

Tesla China achieves 3 million vehicle production milestone

Tesla China has announced that it has produced its 3 millionth vehicle. The electric vehicle maker celebrated the occasion with a commemorative photo showcasing the facility’s 3 millionth car, a red Model Y, and the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai team.

As highlighted by Tesla Vice President Grace Tao in a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Giga Shanghai achieved its 3 million vehicle production milestone on the same day as Tesla’s “We, Robot” event in the United States. She also highlighted that it took Giga Shanghai 32 months to produce its first millionth vehicles but it only took 13 months to go from 2 to 3 million cars produced.

“Today we released the Robotaxi driverless taxi, and here is another good news to share with you: Today, the Shanghai Super Factory ushered in a new milestone – the 3 millionth vehicle rolled off the production line. It took Tesla Shanghai Super Factory 32 months to go from 0 to 1 million vehicles; it took only 13 months to go from 2 million to 3 million vehicles. Each car is a small step, and 3 million is a big leap,” the Tesla executive wrote in her post on Weibo.

Tesla’s official Weibo account also highlighted a number of milestones that have been achieved by Giga Shanghai. As per the electric vehicle maker, three million vehicles have been produced by Gigafactory Shanghai in less than five years, making it Tesla’s most efficient factory. It is also Tesla’s primary vehicle export hub, having exported 1 million vehicles as of late September 2024 to Europe, Asia, and in countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

What is quite amazing about Giga Shanghai is the fact that it is just a really well-optimized facility. If one were to consider the fact that customer deliveries of Model 3 sedans didn’t really start until January 2020 and Model Y deliveries did not start until January 2021, the volume of cars that have been produced by Giga Shanghai becomes nothing short of amazing. This is due to a number of factors, such as great leadership from executives such as Tom Zhu and the facility’s 95% automation rate, to name a few.

Seats, price, special features, release date, and more

Tesla has officially unveiled its Robotaxi Cybercab, a long-awaited and highly-anticipated fully autonomous vehicle that the company says will revolutionize passenger travel. The vehicle was unveiled to the world on October 10 in an event held by Tesla at Warner Bros. Studios in Los Angeles.

During his presentation, CEO Elon Musk mentioned that the Cybercab will enter production before 2027 and will cost less than $30,000. Real-world tests of Unsupervised Full Self Driving (FSD), which would be used in the Cybercab, are expected to start in California and Texas sometime next year.

The following is a quick overview of the Cybercab, its features, price, and other characteristics.

Design and Tire Specs

As soon as the Cybercab showed up on the “We, Robot” livestream, it was immediately evident why the vehicle was named as such. The Cybercab’s front and futuristic design theme was evidently inspired by the Cybertruck, though its curves and lines are inspired by Tesla’s other vehicles, not the brutalist pickup truck.

The Cybercab’s wheels are also fitted with aero covers that extend partly into the tire itself. This gives the Cybercab a very futuristic appearance, and it should also help with the vehicle’s efficiency. Attendees of the event have also observed that the Robotaxi rides on 225/60/R21 tires at the rear.

Cabin, Cargo, and Charging

Tesla did not provide the specific dimensions of the Cybercab’s interior and cargo area, though videos and images shared by attendees of the event showed that the passenger area is quite spacious. Press photos of the Cybercab suggest that it would have some decent cargo space as well, likely exceeding the Model 3’s trunk.

The Tesla Cybercab will not feature a NACS port. Instead, the vehicle would use an inductive charging system. Tesla has been working on wireless inductive charging for some time and acquired Wiferion last year. Teaser images of an inductive charging setup have also been shared by the company in the past.

Price and Potential Variants

Musk says the Tesla Cybercab will cost below $30,000, making the vehicle very competitively priced. Such a price is quite reasonable for a vehicle like the Cybercab, especially for those who wish to use the car as a fleet vehicle for businesses.

It should be noted, however, that Tesla only unveiled the driverless Cybercab for now. Previous reports have suggested that the Cybercab may have a sibling that would be equipped with a steering wheel and pedals. Such a vehicle could be a big hit in markets such as Asia and Europe.

Production and Delivery Date

Tesla said the Cybercab is expected to enter production in 2026, and although he admits he can be very ambitious with his timelines, he confirmed it will aim toward being manufactured “before 2027.” Musk did not mention the vehicle’s estimated delivery date as well, or where it would be produced. Considering that the Cybercab is expected to be built using the company’s unboxed process, however, it would not be surprising if the vehicle gets produced at the Giga Texas complex.
