Tesla to add SiriusXM streaming in upcoming software update

Tesla is preparing to add a dedicated streaming app for SiriusXM in a future software update, as spotted in a post from the satellite radio company that was removed shortly after posting.

As spotted over the weekend by Not a Tesla App, SiriusXM confirmed on its Canada website that its streaming app would soon be coming to Tesla’s vehicles, though the post was swiftly taken down after the news began surfacing. The blog post also detailed the process for getting a free trial of the app, even without most Teslas having satellite radio equipment.

Alongside SiriusXM’s satellite radio, the company operates the non-satellite streaming service that doesn’t currently have an app in Tesla’s vehicles. While Model S and X units include satellite radio receivers and can use the company’s satellite radio, the debut of an app for the company’s streaming channels will give owners of the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck the ability to tune in as well.

Not a Tesla App also points out that the aforementioned free trial was for the SiriusXM 360L package, which features several live sports channels, on-demand shows, and streaming channels. Additionally, like Tesla’s other music and streaming app offerings, the streaming channel would require a Premium Connectivity subscription.

Normally, SiriusXM 360L is $21.99 per month with the All Access package or $16.99 for the smaller Select package. However, the publication also notes that the now-removed blog post hinted that Tesla vehicles would probably require the $28.80/month Platinum package, which includes bonus features such as the ability to stream from other devices such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and more.

In any case, the SiriusXM app is expected to debut with a free one-month trial with everything in the Platinum package.

Tesla began rolling out free three-month trials of the SiriusXM satellite service to Model S and X vehicles in 2020, offering over 150 satellite channels. Even at that point, it was hinted that Tesla had been working on adding SiriusXM capabilities for quite some time, and the rollout suggested that the company would soon expand its onboard entertainment options across its lineup.

Tesla has launched its new referral program with some big changes

Tesla has launched its new referral program, after the company did away with its previous version of the program just a few months ago.

On Saturday, Tesla launched the new referral program via its mobile app, following its decision to end the previous referral program in May. Instead of offering referral credits, the new program essentially offers a flat-out gift card that can be redeemed for a wide range of products, including merch, Supercharging, and more.

Under the newly launched system, the first ten people to use a person’s referral link will receive $1,000 off on purchases of a new Tesla, while those being referred earn $500 toward Supercharging, products, merchandise, service payments, or a new vehicle.

Those who purchase a referral vehicle will also gain a chance to win an invite to upcoming Tesla events.

Users can access the new referral program through mobile app v4.36.1, and you can find more details on how the program works on Tesla’s website here.

Elon Musk has said multiple times throughout this year that Tesla planned to debut a new referral program, though he has also cautioned shareholders on the costs of having such a system in place. In April, Musk highlighted that those with referral points would still be able to use them, just not until the new referral program was launched.

“I think we’ll re-examine the referral program probably next quarter,” Musk said during Tesla’s Annual Shareholder’s Meeting in June.

Musk went on during the meeting to note that Tesla’s referral program effectively increases the price of each car sold, which could end up affecting the end consumer. He then reiterated plans to address the new referral program sometime this quarter, saying that he does support some type of referral arrangements.

“But we’ll re-examine that I think in, next quarter and see if it makes sense,” Musk added. “I think some kind of referral program does make sense.”

The previous referral program used a credits system, in which referrers would earn 7,500 credits when their link was used, a drop from the previous offering of 10,000 credits. Tesla has also changed up its referral benefits from time to time since the program’s inception, often adding, taking away or otherwise adjusting benefits as needed.

Tesla has invested $13.5 million into Malaysia’s charging infrastructure

Tesla has invested $13.5 million into Malaysia’s charging infrastructure through July of this year, as reported by an official from the country following a meeting with the U.S. company this week.

On Thursday, Malaysia Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz detailed a few highlights from a meeting with the Tesla Malaysia team, including the charging investment milestone. The $13.5 million in investments include Tesla’s construction of 52 Supercharger units with up to 250kW charging speeds, 54 Wall Connectors, and over 4,500 home chargers across Peninsular Malaysia, according to the official.

“With an investment reaching USD13.5 million, Tesla shows a strong commitment to the development of EV charging infrastructure in our country,” the official wrote in a post on X, as translated to English from Malay.

The conversation also touched on Tesla’s Megapack battery energy storage systems (BESS), which the official highlights he says has the potential to make energy needs more affordable and efficient while helping to stabilize the country’s electrical grid.

“We also discussed the great potential of battery energy storage technology which is expected to contribute to the improvement of energy efficiency and stability of the Malaysian electricity grid,” the minister added. “This technology has the potential to reduce energy costs and strengthen our national energy infrastructure.”

The minister also noted that Tesla has worked with nine companies in the country to help develop and deploy charging infrastructure, along with partnering with higher education institutes.

Tesla boosted its hiring efforts in Malaysia in February, with a broad range of roles based in the cities of Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Tesla was approved to sell EVs in Malaysia last February, before the company officially began selling its electric vehicles (EVs) in the country last July. The Model Y received over 10,000 orders in just four days. Following the orders, customers had to wait nearly eight months to receive their Model Y units, though deliveries officially began in March.
