Ultimate Street Car (USC) 2010

Now then, we don’t often get dictatorial here.. but for once, we’re going to.. so listen up! Whatever you did have planned for the three days between the 6th and 8th of August, cancel it!.. because you’re all hanging out with us, instead! Why? Because it’s only the bloomin’ weekend of USC, that’s why!

If you’ve never been before, let me enlighten you with the elevator pitch. The finest drag strip in Europe. 35,000 modifying disciples. (many of which are pert and female) The UK’s most superbly executed show cars. The best bands, DJs and tuners. Are you in yet? USC has justifiably achieved the status of ‘legend’ on the show calendar, and a single visit will soon tell you why. No other show packs as much into three days, with real heads-up quarter mile action playing out against a backdrop of high-octane antics that make Ferris Bueller’s Day Off look like the Teddy Bear’s Picnic. To top things of, those lovely Pod people have even frozen the tickets at last year’s prices, so you have no excuse!

Top level drag racing is the order of the day, with Euro Sports Compact drivers battling it out in the kind of times that make Ferrari owners weep into their leather. Or, if you prefer, why not wander over to the drifting area where sideways is the new forwards and tyre smoke is the new oxygen.

In addition to a head spinning line up of acts like Slinky, DJ Luck and MC Neat and the Artful Dodger, you can bank on a (literally) record breaking line-up of stunt performers, Monster Trucks, Jet cars and show cars.

Ever ones for a challenge, we’ve even added the Dotz Mod Pod live build area where our carefully assembled team of spanner wielding artistes will be standing by to rip apart and rebuild a stock hot hatch into a modified thing of beauty over the show weekend. Yep, as DJs spin some of the choicest vinyl in the background, our long-suffering team will be gutting a tuner-scene favourite back to a shell before commencing with a full-bore rebuild including chassis, interior, induction, exhaust, tints, wrap, lighting and audio.. and of course, a simply stunning set of Dotz rims. With only 3 days to do what takes most tuning houses at least a full week, plus of course, the added pressure of 35,000 petrolheads… and a TV crew. Oh yes! almost forgot to mention, the entire show is being shot for Eurosport and Motors, so if you, your car, your missus are camera friendly, who knows, you might end up on the telly! Actually, seeing as we are on drinking terms with the producers, we might even put in a good word for you!

Of course, elsewhere on site, there are simply acres of space for club camping, hardcore BBQ action and chance to kick back with a cold beer and recant your tales of quarter mile heroics. Stock up before you arrive, and you’re free to park up the motor and seriously over-indulge for the entire weekend as everything you need is on site, with several bars and even a lap-dancing club!

Sprinkle on a side order of live stage, Lowriders display, Burnout and Flameout comps and the Autoglym showcar paddock and pretty soon, it becomes the ultimate road trip weekend away. You’ll kick yourselves if you miss it, so don’t!

This weekend sees the Sumo Power GT team head to the south of France for the fourth round of the 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship at the Paul Ricard circuit near Le Castellet on the Riviera. It will again field its two Nissan GT-Rs driven by Michael Krumm/Peter Dumbreck in car number 23 and Warren Hughes/Jamie Campbell-Walter in car number 22.

Following a win in round two at Silverstone, round three at Brno in the Czech Republic saw car 22 carry 40 kilos of success ballast. Even so, Hughes and Campbell-Walter were still able to set competitive lap times and would have secured a top-ten finish if debris from the track had not ruptured a brake-line in the first of the two races.

However, there were no such issues for car 23 and, having led during the first half of the Brno race, the team were delighted to see Krumm and Dumbreck claim an excellent third-place finish. This result put the score at two podiums out of three race meetings so far this season – not bad for a team that was only formed in February!

With Sumo Power GT currently fifth in Team’s Championship, plus Hughes/Campbell Walter seventh and Krumm/Dumbreck ninth in the Driver’s standings, a good haul of points is an important factor this weekend. Therefore, the goal for the East Sussex-based operation is to see both of its Nissan GT-Rs at the front of the 24-car field, even with the 20 kilos of success ballast carried by car 23 following its round three result, whereas car 22 will have none this time around.

To help prepare for Paul Ricard, the team tested last week at Snetterton, where a range of different set-ups were tried. Both cars ran well and, with hot and dry weather prevailing throughout the test, the team was pleased that track conditions were likely to replicate those found in the south of France.

Adding to the team’s pre-race build-up, both of its Nissan GT-Rs went to Brands Hatch on Sunday, where Hughes and Campbell-Walter drove a series of demonstration laps around the ‘Indy’ circuit during a meeting for the popular Time Attack series.

Built in 1969 by the drinks magnate who bears the same name, the character of the 3.8 kilometre Paul Ricard track differs greatly to that of the undulating nature of Brno. Although having attended a group test with the FIA GT1 World Championship there earlier this season, the move to another style of circuit will provide yet more challenges to all of the teams.

This weekend’s timetable sees the GT1 cars first take to the track on Friday at 09.50 for Free Practice, followed by Pre-Qualifying at 15.00. Qualifying takes place on Saturday at 10.45 with the first race scheduled at 17.30 and the main Championship race at 15.45 on Sunday.

“We tried lots of different set-ups in last week’s test, so I’m pleased that we have a number of options we can use at Paul Ricard. As I live in Monaco, for me this is a local track. I’ve tested but never raced there, so I’m really looking forward to this weekend.”

Peter Dumbreck – Driver Car 23
“As well as doing the FIA GT1 World Championship test earlier this season, I raced at Paul Ricard in April, so I’ve done a few laps there already. I think we stand a good chance of running at the front, but you need that little bit extra to win and it’s difficult to say if this circuit will favour us or not until we get there. However, it’s points that count for the championship and therefore a good finish is important.”

Warren Hughes – Driver Car 22
“I’m pleased we’ve lost the success ballast for this race, but obviously not pleased this was because we didn’t get the result we were looking for – and capable of – at Brno. We’ve been on the pace at different types of track so far this season and, with Paul Ricard being different again, it will be interesting to see if we can maintain our level of performance.”

Jamie Campbell-Walter – Driver Car 22
“When you consider we were carrying 40 kilos of ballast at Brno, the car still performed really well and we set lap times not far off the pace of the leaders. I think there are parts of Paul Ricard that will suit our car more than others. However, if we can find that ‘sweet-spot’ with the set-up, then I’m confident we can be back challenging for the top places.”

However, you can’t stand still and we carried out a lot of work during our recent test and learnt even more about the cars. We now need to put that additional knowledge into practice this weekend, as it’s difficult to say how well our cars will be suited to the Paul Ricard track.”

Round three of Time Attack takes place this Sunday, when this hugely popular form of motorsport pays its annual visit to Brands Hatch. Addition to the spectacular track action, the day also features a round of the Pirelli European Drift Championship and the Modified Live Show – plus a host of other attractions and demonstrations planned during the day.

Utilising the ‘Indy’ circuit, Time Attack’s visit to Brands Hatch last year proved highly successful, with good weather and large crowds that were treated to an exciting day of motorsport. And, with the forecast promising another dry and sunny weekend, organisers are confident that this year’s event will prove to be even more popular.

Both Time Attack and the Pirelli European Drift Championship have only seen one winner so far this season: Gareth Lloyd scoring outright wins in rounds one and two of Time Attack at Oulton Park and Knockhill, with Mark Luney doing similar in the EDC. They therefore not only go to Brands Hatch as clear championship leaders, but with targets on their backs – a scenario that is guaranteed to generate some serious competition.

After the gates open at 9.30, the action starts at 10.00 with practice for the Drift cars on the left-hander of Surtees, followed by the right-hander of Clearways. The Time Attack warm-up sessions for the Club Challenge, Club Pro and Pro Classes get underway half-hour later, with the 900bhp+ cars in the Pro-Class expected to lap at speeds far exceeding those of the Touring Cars.

Part one of the Drift Championship takes place at midday, which is immediately followed by Time Attack practice and qualifying sessions. Part two of the Drifting take place at 16.00, with the Time Attack finals held from 16.50 onwards.

In-between times, there are series of on-track demonstrations, the most impressive of which is destined to be the appearance of the two awesome Sumo Power GT team’s Nissan GT-Rs, which are competing in this year’s FIA GT1 World Championship. These 600bhp Super-cars will be driven by two of the team’s four drivers: Warren Hughes and Jamie Campbell-Walter, with demonstration laps scheduled to take place at 11.30 and 15.30.

There will also be a great deal to see ‘off-track’, with the Modified Live Summer Special show attracting a variety of exhibitors from all over the country. These include: tuning companies, component manufacturers, accessory and parts retailers, car clubs and static displays featuring some exceptional cars. There are even big-screen TVs located in bars and restaurants around the circuit for those who want to watch the footie!
